Brown Social Innovation Fellowship
The Brown Social Impact Fellowship (BSIF) supports Duke students who are committed to creating positive social change in the Duke and Durham communities.
The fellowship was founded by Duke alumni to honor the impact of Professor Tony Brown and Teddie Brown. Together their mentorship inspired generations of students to see how small acts can lead to lasting impact. BSIF continues this legacy by strengthening the culture of civic engagement, social innovation, and community partnership.
BSIF provides a comprehensive package of support to help students advance bold and innovative student-led projects. Fellows receive guidance in developing their leadership, deepening their understanding their complex community challenges, and growing their ventures in ways that strengthen the future of Duke and Durham.
Tony and Teddie Brown
Tony and Teddie Brown shaped generations of Duke students through their shared commitment to teaching, mentorship, and service. Tony taught in the Sanford School of Public Policy from 1993 until 2021 and reached more than 2,300 students. Many describe his class as transformational and foundational to their understanding of leadership, service, and community.
Teddie’s presence and genuine care were equally influential. Together they created an environment where students felt supported and encouraged to take meaningful action.
With their guidance, students launched hundreds of community projects at Duke and in Durham. Their influence continues to ripple outward through alumni who remain committed to strengthening their communities.
